Kansas Lawmakers Work on State-Owned Casino Legislation

TOPEKA, Kansas – As reported by the Kansas City Star: "A Senate committee on Wednesday began working on legislation that could bring state-owned casinos to Kansas.

"After considering a flurry of amendments developed by a coalition of groups from the horse and dog industry, the Senate Federal and State Affairs Committee ran out of time and scheduled further consideration of the bill for today.

"The bill was developed by Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, who supports creating destination casino complexes in the state, and authorizing racetracks and fraternal and veterans' clubs to have video lottery terminals.

"…One key change from the governor's plan that the committee approved would increase the number of video lottery terminals, similar to slot machines, that could be placed at state-licensed racetracks from a total of 2,500 to 4,000…"
