Kansas Casino Vote Likely

KANSAS – As reported by the Wichita Eagle: "Park City had plans to build a casino with an American Indian tribe. A local grassroots group was fighting it. And county voters got the final say.

"The year was 1993. The grassroots group was Stand Up for Wichita. And almost 60 percent of voters said no to a casino.

"Now, Sedgwick County commissioners are poised to approve on Wednesday another countywide election on casino gambling under similar circumstances.

"But this time, even those who oppose gambling say it's likely to pass. The vote would not be binding, but would be intended to signal to state leaders whether residents would accept a casino.

"…Experts say the changing demographics of the city and a push to boost education funding with gambling tax dollars means that casinos are more likely to be endorsed by voters this time around…"
