Kansas Casino Manager Arrested23 April 2004KANSAS – As reported by the Native American Times: "The general manager of the Wyandotte Nation's casino in Kansas City is free on bond after being arrested Thursday. A tribal spokesman, meanwhile, is criticizing Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline's actions. "Ellis Enyart, 52, was arrested on a Kansas warrant last night and taken to the Ottawa County Jail in Miami. He is charged with possession of a gambling device and receiving earnings from a gambling operation. He faces a maximum of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. "The arrest stems from a feud between Wyandotte and Kansas officials over a casino in downtown Kansas City. Authorities forcibly shut down the casino on April 1. Tribal attorneys claim that state and local authorities have no jurisdiction over the casino because it is on trust land. The National Indian Gaming Commission said the land in question couldn't be used for gaming. The tribe has appealed to the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, and the state and other defendants have until today to respond…" |
