Kansas Casino Deal Still in Plans

KANSAS – As reported by the Topeka Capital-Journal: "Gov. Kathleen Sebelius isn't quite ready to play her hand on a tribal gaming compact that would bring a massive casino to Wyandotte County.

"Matt All, the governor's chief legal counsel, said Wednesday in a meeting with the Senate Federal and State Affairs Committee that Sebelius was still committed to gaining legislative consent for her compact with the Kickapoo and Sac & Fox tribes to open a $210 million casino and hotel complex near the Kansas Speedway.

"…In November, the Legislative Coordinating Council declined to act on the compact. That required the governor to take it to the full Legislature.

"…Under the deal negotiated by the governor, both tribes would close their reservation casinos in Brown County in exchange for opening the new casino. State regulation of the new facility would exceed oversight of existing Indian gambling establishments, All said…"
