Kansas Casino Being Renovated

KANSAS CITY, Kansas – As reported by the Kansas City Star: "Construction activity at the currently closed 7th Street Casino in downtown Kansas City, Kan., is renovation work, not demolition, a tribal business official says.

"'We're going to do some improvements while we've got the time,' Wyandotte Enterprises executive Ellis Enyart said Friday. 'We're just kind of cleaning things up a little bit, making some changes' in anticipation of reopening.

"…Kansas officials have challenged the land's de facto tribal reservation status since it was granted by the federal government in the mid-1990s. In August 2003, the tribe defied officials and opened the casino in several mobile building units parked beside the tribe's Huron Cemetery across the street from City Hall…"
