Kansas Bill Heads to Senate

15 March 2006

TOPEKA, Kansas – As reported by the Kansas City Star: "A bill authorizing two casinos and slot machines at dog and horse tracks, including the Woodlands, could be debated in the Senate as early as Thursday.

"The bill earmarks 75 percent of the state's share of gambling revenue for schools and 25 percent for local property tax relief.

"The property tax reduction would send about $10 million to Johnson County, $8 million to Sedgwick County and $2.5 million to Wyandotte County.

"Supporters said they were optimistic, but casinos and slots had never gained Senate approval anywhere outside of American Indian reservations.

"…Before sending the bill to the full Senate, the Federal and State Affairs Committee Tuesday altered the bill in an effort to improve its chance of passage…"
