Jumpers Take the Plunge14 September 2004RENO, Nevada -- As reported by the Reno Gazette-Journal: "Four B.A.S.E. jumpers launched themselves Monday off four casino hotel buildings in Reno and Sparks, throwing flips from as high as 335 feet before throwing parachutes and landing safely on the ground. "The event was a promotion for energy drink maker Red Bull, the Reno-Sparks Convention & Visitors Authority's "America's Adventure Place" tourism campaign, and the Red Bull Air Races at this weekend's 41st National Championships Air Races and Air Show at Stead Field. "B.A.S.E. (Building, Antenna, Span, Earth) jumping is legal, but jumper use constitutes trespassing at most sites and some, such as national parks, have specific policies prohibiting the activity. "The athletes each jumped off John Ascuaga's Nugget, the Reno Hilton, Circus Circus Reno and the Silver Legacy Resort Casino towers. The jumpers spend only one or two seconds in a free fall before deploying a parachute. "The only incident of the day came when B.A.S.E. jumper and Tahoe-Donner resident Charles Bryan hit a tall fence erected as a barrier at the Hilton Amphitheater. "Bystanders and event officials rushed to Bryan after he hit the fabric-covered fence with a loud thwack, but the 34-year-old professional skydiver quickly stood up and said he was not injured..." |
