Judge Approves Gambling in West Virginia County

WEST VIRGINIA – As reported by the Weston Democrat: "Judge Thomas H. Keadle of the 26th Circuit Court decided Wednesday, Nov. 17, to permit legal gambling in Lewis County.

"His decision denied a writ of mandamus that would have cancelled the decision of Lewis County voters to allow casino gambling at the old Weston State Hospital.

"Lewis County's Ministerial Association and the Lewis County Coalition Against Expansion of Gambling on Oct. 15 sought the writ of mandamus before the general election of Nov. 2., in which voters approved the gambling measure.

"Those two groups did not want the question on the ballot and sought to overturn the voters' decision through the court case.

"…Mike Queen, spokesman for the two anti-gambling organizations, said Judge Keadle's decision will be appealed to the West Virginia Supreme Court within 30 days…"
