Jena Band of Choctaws presents casino plans14 June 2007GRANT PARISH, Louisiana -- As reported by the Alexandria-Pineville Town Talk: "Grant Parish police jurors are scheduled to listen Thursday as Jena Band of Choctaws tribal representatives present arguments in favor of a gaming compact. "The Jena Band of Choctaws wants to build a casino on newly proclaimed reservation land in southern Grant Parish near the Rapides Parish border, tribal Chief Christine Norris has said in a previously published story. Grant Parish police jurors earlier voted 6 to 1 against allowing that level of gaming in Grant Parish, according to Jury Manager Sam Brimer. Brimer said he was the sole juror who opposed the measure. "Brimer said he believes gaming could still come to the parish if the American Indian tribe decides to bypass seeking a compact with the state through the governor's office and seeks permission of the U.S. Department of Interior. < "...Proponents and opponents of gaming are expected to be present during Thursday's police jury meeting, Brimer said, which is set to begin at 5 p.m. in the Grant Parish courthouse in Colfax..." |
