Jemez Pueblo Moves Casino Bid Forward

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico – As reported by the Albuquerque Journal: "Jemez Pueblo and Santa Fe art dealer Jerry Peters have formally approached the federal government for approval of New Mexico's first off-reservation casino in Anthony.

" The Bureau of Indian Affairs regional office in Albuquerque on Dec. 23 received paperwork from the Jemez Pueblo-Peters business partnership, seeking to place part of a 120-acre parcel in Anthony in federal trust, the office confirmed Tuesday.

" The northern New Mexico pueblo wants to use the off-reservation site, halfway between Las Cruces and El Paso, to develop a casino that would eventually create about 1,000 jobs in southern New Mexico and provide economic benefits to the pueblo more than 250 miles away.

"…Critics have said that allowing Jemez to build a casino in Anthony would set a worrisome precedent, opening the state to a deluge of off-reservation casinos…"
