Jamul Tribe Accused of Bluffing

29 August 2005

JAMUL INDIAN RESERVATION, California – As reported by the San Diego Union Tribune: "Is the Jamul Indian band playing a gambler's bluff in proposing a towering casino complex?

"Neighbors are incensed over the tribe's new plan for a 30-story hotel-casino in their East County community. Some say the real aim is to weaken their opposition to the tribe's former proposal, a hotel-casino of about the same size but built out, not up.

"But they don't think they will get that. And so, they insist, their sky-high proposal is very, very real.

"…The former plan, which has been awaiting Interior Department approval since 2003, requires federal annexation of 81 adjacent acres. That proposal – reduced by 20 acres last year – has been held up almost two years by political objections, led by county Supervisor Dianne Jacob, who lives in Jamul.

"…Jacob on Friday characterized the tribe's new proposal as a 'political power play' intended to put pressure on the community and local officials.

"…Tribal leaders say they have met with the other four supervisors, but Jacob has rebuffed them…"
