Jamul downsizes casino plans26 March 2007JAMUL, California – As reported by the San Diego Union Tribune: "The Jamul Indian Village, the tribe with the state's smallest reservation, has downsized its expectations for an East County casino and cut off talks with the state over a gambling pact. "Its new plan is likely to do little to quell community and political opposition. "If built, Jamul's gaming hall will be the only Southern California Indian casino filled exclusively with what are known as Class 2 machines, bingo-and poker-based gambling in which players bet against each other for a shared prize pool rather than play against the house. "Tribal officials say they won't make as much money as they would have if they had wrapped up a deal for Class 3, Las Vegas-style gambling with the state, but they see it as the only way to steer around the roadblocks that community and political opponents of their casino have thrown in the way. "San Diego County Supervisor Dianne Jacob is among those who have raised concerns for years about traffic and crime the casino could generate near the 6-acre reservation 22 miles from downtown San Diego. "Jacob said she doesn't like the latest proposal, especially because the local community will have less of a say in what the tribe does…" |
