Jamul Casino will remain closed until further notice2 April 2020(PRESS RELEASE) -- The Jamul Indian Village of California today announced that its Jamul Casino will remain closed until further notice in response to recent developments on the COVID-19 pandemic. Following the closure of the casino on March 20, the Tribe committed to covering base pay and benefits for all team members of the operation through April 11 with the hope of reopening and getting back to business shortly thereafter. However, with the extension of federal guidelines for social distancing through the end of April and an indeterminate end to California’s stay at home order, the Tribe is unable to provide clear guidance on when it will be able to reopen the casino. Beginning April 12, the casino will reduce to minimum staffing levels to maintain the facility and prepare for reopening. All other team members will be able to cash out their paid time off balances and access the recently passed CARES Act to continue to support their families until the casino is ready to reopen. The Tribe has also committed to extend coverage for health benefits for these individuals through the end of May. Chairwoman Erica M. Pinto states, “We are deeply saddened that we have reached the point of having to make these difficult decisions, but they have become unavoidable given the uncertainty we face as to when we will be able to reopen our business. We have and will continue to do everything in our power to create the best possible outcome for our team members, and we look forward to welcoming them back very soon. We wish them and their families all the very best until then.” On March 18, 2020, the Jamul Indian Village of California announced their temporary closure effective March 20 and issued a statement declaring a state of emergency due to the COVID-19 crisis. They have also temporarily closed their tribal government offices and tribal businesses in order to ensure the health and well-being of their tribal members, guests, team members, and community at large. |
