Jamie "The Bear" McDonald to go for pie-eating record at Thunder Valley

17 May 2013

LINCOLN, Calif. (PRESS RELEASE) -- Thunder Valley Casino Resort will kick off its 10-year anniversary celebration and grand opening of its all-new buffet with an attempt to break the world apple pie eating record.

Professional eater Jamie "The Bear" McDonald will attempt to break the record on Monday, May 20 at 8:30 a.m. on the casino's main stage.

"Everyone knows that our apple pies are the best in the world and the buffet at Thunder Valley is second to none," said Dawn Clayton, general manager at Thunder Valley Casino Resort. "We are celebrating our 10-year anniversary in a variety of different ways throughout the property all summer long, but nothing is bigger than setting a world record. We are excited to soon be the official home of the world apple pie eating record."

The current apple pie eating record was set in 2011 at the Lower East Side Apple Day National Apple Pie Eating Championship. The record stands at 5 pounds, 8 ounces in six minutes.

In order to break the record, chefs at Thunder Valley spent several days testing different pie dimensions and discussing alternative crust-to-filling proportions. Ultimately, a single 10-pound pie baked on a special custom pie tin and prepared extra deep was decided on. Several additional pies will be on hand in case more than 10 pounds of apple pie is consumed during the 6-minute contest.

Thunder Valley Casino Resort partnered with All Pro Eating to sanction the record attempt. Guinness no longer recognizes food consumption records.

The event is open to the public and is sure to be a once in a lifetime experience. Each guest who attends will receive a free piece of apple pie.

Thunder Valley Casino Resort recently completed a $3.6 million remodel of its 500-seat buffet. Guests can enjoy several live-action cooking stations including a brick oven and state-of-the-art stainless steel equipment throughout the buffet.
