Jair du Cochet Put Down

10 March 2004

UK -- As reported by the BBC: ``Jair du Cochet, a leading contender for the Cheltenham Gold Cup, has had to be put down after breaking a leg.

``The horse, trained by Guillaume Macaire in France, was second favourite behind Best Mate for the big race on 18 March.

``He caused a shock by becoming one of the few horses to defeat the dual Gold Cup winner in the Peterborough Chase at Huntingdon in November.

``The seven-year-old also won the Pillar Chase at Cheltenham in January.

``Jair du Cochet had been completing his preparations for the Cheltenham Festival on the home gallops when the tragedy occurred.

``...His absence sharply boosts Best Mate's chance of emulating the great Arkle by winning three Gold Cups in succession..."
