Jail and Casino Escape Aussie Smoking Ban

7 September 2004

AUSTRALIA -- As reported by the Australian: "Smokers will be banned from all Queensland pubs, clubs and outdoor eateries from mid-2006 under the nation's toughest anti-smoking laws, but high-roller gamblers and prisoners will be exempt from the restrictions.

"From January 1, smoking will also be outlawed at all patrolled beaches, near children's playgrounds, stadiums and close to building entrances.

"Shops will also be banned from advertising tobacco products and it will become an offence for children to lie about their age when attempting to buy cigarettes.

"Queensland yesterday became the second state after Tasmania to institute smoking bans in all pubs and clubs, from July 1 2006, with other states expected to enforce similar bans in coming months.

"...However, there will be some exceptions to the ban -- high rollers in casinos and prisoners in the state's jails will be allowed to continue to smoke..."
