Jack Binion Makes Record Donation to University in Louisiana

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana – June 29, 2001 – As reported by the Associated Press: ``Jack Binion, who controls several casinos including the Horseshoe Casino in Bossier City, has given $1 million to the Southern University System -- the largest single gift in the university system's history.

``Binion, a member of a prominent Las Vegas gambling family, said he donated the money to "make a difference."

``The committment calls for annual donations of $100,000 for the next decade to the Southern system. Plans call for the gift to be invested in several state programs that offer matching funds in order to increase the total amount to $1.7 million.

``System president Leon Tarver said the top priority will be to invest $400,000 of Binion's gift to create a new endowed chair at the College of Business at Southern University's Baton Rouge campus…”
