Ivan Costs Mississippi Casinos Millions

MISSISSIPPI – As reported by the Associated Press: "Hurricane Ivan did what most gamblers dream of — took nearly $10 million away from Mississippi's coastal casinos.

"Mississippi's 29 state-regulated casinos collectively recorded $211 million in gross revenue in September, the lowest showing of the year and a $34 million decrease over August, according to the state Tax Commission.

"Leigh Ann Wilkinson, spokeswoman for the Mississippi Gaming Commission, said 12 casinos on the coast, which are usually open every day of the year, lost money when they closed 21/2 days in September during mandatory evacuations brought on by Hurricane Ivan.

"…Brian Richard, director of research for the Mississippi Gaming Association, estimated the 12 coast casinos lost about $10 million when they were forced to close for Ivan…"
