Issue of Gambling Not Going Away1 March 2004MONTGOMERY – As reported by the Mobile Register: ``Milton McGregor, the dog track owner who wants to expand gambling in Alabama, hasn't been roaming the hallways at the State House during the opening weeks of this year's legislative session. ``There hasn't been anything for him to lobby for: Lawmakers have spent their workdays battling with Republican Gov. Bob Riley over competing proposals designed to make government more "accountable." Only a few gambling bills have been introduced, and none have gotten onto a committee agenda for debate. ``Yet various legislators and lobbyists say the gambling issue is bubbling below the surface and is likely to come into view at some point. ``And all sides expect the debate to be every bit as contentious as in years past. ``…Some gambling proponents, however, posit that the political landscape in 2004 -- bleak budget forecasts combined with public resistance to higher taxes -- afford them an advantage not present previously. ``…The Alabama Constitution bans lotteries and full-fledged casino gambling. Four dog tracks operate in the state: Mobile Greyhound Park in Theodore, Greenetrack in Eutaw, Birmingham Greyhound Racing track and Victoryland in Macon County…" |
