Isle of Capri Struggles with Bad Track Record

PENNSYLVANIA – As reported by the Pennsylvania Express Times: "State gaming regulators will get an eyeful when they begin their routine investigation of the Mississippi-based company applying for a horseracing license in Fogelsville.

"The publicly held company, Isle of Capri Casinos, has allowed minors to slip past casino security, forged business ties with admitted criminals and failed to control consultants who lied to planners about permits the company didn't have.

"The infractions occurred over the years in various places throughout the nation, although most brushes with the law appear to be in Louisiana and Missouri.

"State Sen. Lisa Boscola, a Democrat representing the Lehigh Valley, said her support for a competing horseracing proposal in Northampton County grew even stronger after she discovered Isle of Capri's background.

"…Les McMackin, a corporate vice president and company spokesman, said all of the incidents stem from factors beyond the company's control.

"…Bill Thompson, a gaming expert and professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, said Isle of Capri's background merits scrutiny.

"…Isle of Capri owns and operates 14 casinos in six states, including Biloxi, Miss.; Kansas City, Mo.; Bossier City, La.; and Black Hawk, Colo. The company also owns Pompano Park racing, a harness-racing track in Florida.

"…In Pennsylvania, Isle of Capri is competing with eight other applicants for the single thoroughbred horseracing license available in the state. A company owned by a state association of horse breeders is also applying for the license to put a 435-acre track and casino in Palmer Township…"
