Isle of Capri reconsiders leaving Grand Bahama

BAHAMAS – As reported by the Bahama Journal: "The only casino operator in Grand Bahama is reconsidering its decision to abandon the business, Prime Minister Perry Christie conveyed in the House of Assembly earlier this week, in stark contrast to what an executive of the company had communicated quite recently.

"Mr. Christie, who referred to the challenge of marketing the industrial centre as a tourism destination, said the new development could quite possibly have something to do with the new leadership at the Mississippi based Isle of Capri Casinos. The company runs the gaming centre at the Our Lucaya Resort.

"…Late last month the casino company's Director of Corporate Communications Jill Haynes told the Bahama Journal that nothing had changed.

"…When the casino initially communicated that it was pulling out of the Grand Bahama enterprise, executives had given the government a 12-month deadline which would mean that by June 2007, the operation would be shut down.

"…Casino operators in Grand Bahama have apparently had a rough time maintaining their businesses and paying government taxes. Prime Minister Christie conceded that point. He also referred to the government's attempts to remedy the situation…"
