Isildur1 to take on Negreanu in SuperStar Showdown

15 March 2011

(PRESS RELEASE) -- IT’S ON! The heads-up match the poker world has been waiting for is finally going to happen. On March 20, Team PokerStars Pros Viktor “Isildur1” Blom and Daniel “KidPoker” Negreanu will face off online in the next SuperStar Showdown challenge.

This time, however, the match will be spread across two consecutive weekends. It will begin on March 20 for 2,500 hands of No Limit Hold’em across four tables at stakes no lower than $50/$100, and will continue the following Sunday (March 27) for another 2,500 hands of high stakes heads-up action.

The players will bring $150,000 to the tables for the entire challenge and the stacks will not be reset at the half-way stage. As ever the winner will be the player who shows a profit at the end of the match, or wins all of their opponent’s match bankroll.

SUPERSTAR SHOWDOWN RECAP

Match 1: Isaac ‘philivey2694’ Haxton
Isildur1 didn’t get off to a great start on December 19, 2010, when he suffered a $41,701 defeat to Haxton in his first SuperStar Showdown. However, Haxton did run good and had plenty of compliments for Isildur1: “No one has ever more consistently made me miserable when playing against them… Isildur’s brand of over the top, but carefully balanced, aggression is unlike anything I’ve played against and really takes me out of my comfort zone in a lot of situations.”

Match 2: Antanas ‘Tony G’ Guoga
Isildur1 bounced back with a comfortable win over Tony G. Blom booked a $44,280 win over his Australian opponent which moved him $2,579 into the black across both SuperStar Showdown matches. Trash-talking Tony G did have a few choice words for his assailant during the contest… “I control u like a baby,” but by the end admitted the best man won... “I have been humiliated...well done...let me go and look for my bike.”

Match 3: Daniel ‘w00ki3z.’ Cates
A battle between the 20-year-olds took place at the end of January, with Isildur1 continuing his hot streak by taking $51,195 from his American opponent. It was no mean feat considering Cates was already $750,000 up for the year after just one month.

Match 4: Eugene ‘MyRabbiFoo’ Katchalov
Ukrainian-American Katchalov, who had just beaten Daniel Negreanu heads-up in the PCA Super High Roller event for a $1.5 million win, went into the contest on top form. But Isildur1 quickly stopped him in his tracks with a massive $111.750 win, which took his total SuperStar Showdown winnings to $166,065 and secured a 3-1 lead.

Match 5: Dodgyfish72
The first mini SuperStar Showdown challenge saw online qualifier Attila “Dodgyfish27” Gulcsik from Hungary hit the tables against Islidur1 at the end of February. The rules of the match remained the same – 2,500 hands across four tables of No Limit Hold’em – but the stakes were scaled down to a tenth of the size – $5/$10 with $15,000 bankrolls. Dodgyfish27 was staked by PokerStars and got to keep anything he had left at the end. In the end it turned out to be almost the lot when he lost by just $10 or one big blind! Nevertheless, the narrowest of wins took Isildur1’s record to 4-1.
