Ireland: Councillors support may be needed for Castlebar casino planning application

CO MAYO, Ireland -- As reported by the Mayo News: "A Castlebar casino owner has been ordered by the Circuit Court to close down his business pending the outcome of a planning application. Proprietor, Mr Niall Mulholland, had opened the Castle Casino in late September without receiving planning permission for a change of use of the premises at Unit 1 of McHale Business Park.

"And it now seems likely that the casino will be closed for some time as Mr Mulholland may have to seek a material contravention to secure planning permission for the casino at its current location. The area in question is zoned retail/industrial and as a casino-type development does not fit these planning criteria, the development would need the support of six of the nine Castlebar town councillors to materially contravene the current Castlebar Town Development Plan.

"...Barrister for the Town Council, Mr John Jordan, argued that under Irish legislation gaming is unlawful but that such initiatives were opening up under the disguise of being clubs..."
