Iowans Mixed About Casinos19 November 2003OSCEOLA, Iowa – As reported by the Des Moines Register: "Karen Pettit of Mount Ayr wishes she didn't have to drive almost 50 miles just to play a few slot machines. "Pettit and other Iowans could be in luck if the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission on Thursday lifts a moratorium on issuing new casino licenses. "Denny Moore, 44, of Corning wants a casino nearer to his town, too, but for a different reason. "`It would really bring the town up' and create jobs, he said. "…A Des Moines Register Iowa Poll conducted in September found that 69 percent of adults opposed more casinos in Iowa, although a majority believed gambling has been good for the state. Gambling proponents point to recent elections in Black Hawk, Palo Alto, Wapello and Worth counties in which voters have authorized excursion boat gambling. "George Marsh of Des Moines, on a Monday visit to Osceola, said he wants his town to be in line if the moratorium is dropped. "…Supporters of the moratorium say they fear more casinos will create more problem gamblers. "…A majority of the five-member gaming commission is undecided on the moratorium, which was adopted in 1998 because of concerns about market saturation…" |
