Iowa Tribe to Reopen Casino by Christmas

TAMA, Iowa – As reported by the Associated Press: "Officials of the Meskwaki tribe have abandoned their goal of reopening their casino by Thanksgiving. Tribal spokesman Tom Jochum says Christmas is more realistic.

"An audit of the casino from March through its closing in May will determine when the National Indian Gaming Commission will lift its closure order.

"…The $150 million in tribal assets currently frozen by Wells Fargo Bank in Marshalltown will not prevent the casino from opening, Jochum said.

"…Jochum called bank president Jim Lowrance's actions `spiteful,' saying Lowrance refused to release the assets when he learned the tribe was planning to move the money to another bank. Lowrance has said the bank simply wants the district court to tell it which tribal council the bank should recognize…"
