Iowa Town Struggles with Casino Issues

RIVERSIDE, Iowa – As reported by the Iowa City Press-Citizen: "In addition to promised jobs and entertainment, the new Riverside Casino and Resort is bringing difficult decisions to the town of 1,000 people.

"Casino managers have asked the city to close a rural road to make way for a golf course.

"The city also has been grappling with where to locate a new water treatment plant to handle a growing community and the casino project.

"Walnut Avenue, a gravel road with a steep incline toward Johnson County, where it turns into Harry's Road, is speckled with a handful of farmhouses.

"Dan Kehl, general manager of the new casino, said his group owns land on both sides of the road and thinks closing it will allow for a better golf course.

"…Kehl said his group is working with the city to create options for residents who need access to the road…"
