Iowa TouchPlay Debate Heats Up21 February 2006IOWA – As reported by the Des Moines Register: "The line to talk formed more than an hour before state legislators began taking public comments Monday evening about the Iowa Lottery's controversial TouchPlay machines. "The Iowa House chamber's balconies, which sit empty during most Statehouse business, began to fill at the same time. "Supporters wore buttons showing their support for the lottery's video machines. They touted the devices as being good for small businesses and the state's bottom-line. "Opponents wore stickers opposing the devices, which look like slot machines but are programmed differently. They said the machines are an expansion of gambling and are too easily accessible to children and gambling addicts. "The TouchPlay devices are in 2,800 locations in places such as bars, gas stations and grocery stores across Iowa. "State legislators listened to more than 50 people speak late into the evening.
