Iowa: Senate May Dump Cap on Gambling Licenses16 March 2004DES MOINES, Iowa -- As reported by the Sioux City Journal: ``Key lawmakers said Monday they'll give strong consideration to getting rid of a moratorium on new gambling licenses that was part of a House bill passed last month as the gambling discussion moved to a Senate subcommittee this week. ``Mark Zieman, a Republican senator from Postville who chairs the committee, said members could "possibly" strike language from the House bill that placed a moratorium on new gambling licenses in state law. ``The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission, which awards gambling licenses and regulates the industry, decided in November it wouldn't lift a moratorium on new licenses put in place more than five years ago. `` The commission said it wanted clarification from the Legislature on several gambling issues before it would lift the moratorium and potentially hand out any new licenses. ``Zieman said he thinks the commission should make the call on whether new licenses are issued, not lawmakers. ``…The subcommittee is expected to sign off on a bill by the end of the week, which could see action by the full State Government Committee as early as next week…" |
