Iowa Regulators Won't Hear New Bids

IOWA – As reported by the Des Moines Register: "Iowa communities desperate to renew bids for riverboat casino licenses will have to wait up to two years.

"The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission informally agreed Thursday not to issue new gambling licenses for at least 18 to 24 months.

"The commission stopped short of adopting formal rules to prohibit more licenses for riverboats and racetracks. But all five state regulators made it clear they want to give four recently approved riverboat casinos a chance to get their operations up and running.

"…The action was disappointing, but not unexpected, for supporters of several casino projects rejected by state regulators in May.

"Steve Siegel, a Wapello County supervisor and chairman of a nonprofit group supporting a casino project in Ottumwa, said his organization will respect the commission's decision. But he expects to return sometime in the future with another application for a gambling boat license…"
