Iowa Legislature Faces Gambling Issue

12 January 2004

DES MOINES, Iowa – As reported by the Iowa Globe Gazette: "Iowa lawmakers gavel in the 2004 legislative session this morning with an election-year budget struggle and a potential battle over gambling dominating their agenda.

"…[House Speaker Christopher Rants], R-Sioux City, said the House State Government Committee likely will begin work on gambling legislation with hopes of tackling the contentious issue early in the session.

"…Although lawmakers hope for an early gambling debate, building a consensus on the issue could take time.

"Four Iowa counties, including Worth, have voted for new riverboat casinos and local leaders hope lawmakers will pave the way for expansion. But existing casino operators and gambling opponents are skeptical of the need for new competition…"
