Iowa Legislators Get Earful

IOWA – As reported by the Des Moines Register: "Iowans wanting a new casino in their area argued passionately Monday night that an expansion of gambling would be good for economic development, but several compulsive gamblers told a different story.

"'My estranged husband is a compulsive gambler and our estrangement is a direct result of his gambling,' said Stacey Crow of Des Moines, who broke down crying as she spoke to lawmakers in the House chamber.

"As the Legislature studies changes that could dramatically change the face of gambling in Iowa, 33 people spoke at a public hearing Monday night on the issue.

"Many of those in favor of expanding gambling were from areas wanting to build a new casino. Residents of Black Hawk, Franklin, Palo Alto, Wapello and Worth counties have voted to authorize gambling.

"…Church groups, compulsive gamblers and Iowans from counties that rejected a gambling referendum are among those who spoke on the other side of the issue…"
