Iowa Lawmakers Launch Gambling Study

IOWA – As reported by the Des Moines Register: "In a process that stood in stark contrast to last year's secret 'working groups,' a panel of state lawmakers on Thursday launched a very open, intense, full-blown study into what changes should be made to Iowa's gambling industry.

"The first meeting of the House State Government Committee's gaming subcommittee was attended by about 50 lobbyists, who were urged to make their desires for this year's gambling debate known to the seven-member panel.

"…Michael Mahaffey, chairman of the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission, urged lawmakers to look at issues including whether to expand the number of casinos in Iowa, whether riverboat cruising should be required, what are appropriate casino locations, and whether gambling treatment should be fully funded, among other issues.

"…House leaders have indicated they intend to tackle a variety of potential changes to one of the most controversial issues within the state. Senate leaders said they are also willing to consider changes, but said they will wait for the House to pass a bill before they decide whether to consider it…"
