Iowa Governor Wants Casino Decision Reconsidered16 May 2005IOWA – As reported by the Des Moines Register: "Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack on Saturday said he wants state gaming commissioners to reconsider last week's decision to deny Ottumwa a casino license. "Commissioners balked at the idea, saying the governor's doubts cheapened the process put into place to protect Iowans. "…The governor-appointed Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission last week approved new licenses for four new casinos to be located in Waterloo, Emmetsburg, Riverside and Worth County, all either in northern or eastern Iowa. The five-member commission denied licenses in Fort Dodge, Ottumwa and rural Franklin County. Ottumwa is in southern Iowa. "…Commissioners spent six months deciding how many and in what locations new casinos should be allowed in Iowa, said Joyce Jarding, a commissioner from Farley. "Allowing too many new casinos would be irresponsible, Jarding said. She said it's unlikely the commission will reconsider, adding that she is disappointed with the governor and some legislators who now publicly doubt the commission's decisions.
