Iowa Governor Supports Ottumwa Games

IOWA – As reported by the Des Moines Register: "Gov. Tom Vilsack said Monday that he still supported plans for a riverboat casino in Ottumwa, but that he wouldn't get further involved in a debate over whether state regulators should issue more gambling licenses.

"Vilsack had expressed disappointment after the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission voted May 11 to reject plans for the $40 million Wild Rose Ottumwa casino.

"The governor's comments stirred hope among the project's supporters, said Wapello County Supervisor Steve Siegel, chairman of the local nonprofit riverboat authority.

"But Vilsack told Register reporters and editors that he planned to stay out of the commission's deliberations on a license moratorium…"
