Iowa Gambling Foe Wants Study Stopped

DES MOINES, Iowa – As reported by the Associated Press: "Concerned that a gambling report might be tilted in favor of Iowa's $1 billion-a-year casino industry, the head of a statewide anti-gambling group has asked lawmakers to withdraw the $90,000 contract for the study.

"Robert Miller of Muscatine, president of the Truth About Gambling Foundation, said he wants to stop a report on the socioeconomic impact of gambling in Iowa.

"…Miller said academics who reviewed Per Mar's proposal told him that the research would be flawed and that the company's eventual report might simply become a promotional tool for the state's gambling industry.

"He wrote to Senate Majority Leader Stew Iverson, R-Dows, and other legislators asking them to halt the study.

"…The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission plans to consider the report's findings, due Feb. 25, when it determines how many additional riverboat casino licenses it will issue next year…"
