Iowa gambling debate revisited11 January 2008IOWA -- As reported by the Des Moines Register: "State gambling regulators plan to reopen a debate on whether to expand Iowa's casino industry. "The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission on March 6 will discuss the possibility of issuing additional gambling licenses, said Kate Cutler of Council Bluffs, the commission's chairwoman. "She declined today to predict whether more casino licenses would be awarded, saying she wants to analyze the status of Iowa's existing casinos and their revenues. "...Iowa has 20 casinos, including three racetrack gambling operations, 14 riverboat casinos and three American Indian casinos. Over the past two years, new casinos have opened in Waterloo, Riverside, Worth County and Emmetsburg. Last year, more than $1.3 billion was left behind at Iowa's state-regulated casinos, which had 22 million admissions. "Business and community leaders representing Ottumwa, Fort Dodge and Tama attended today's commission meeting in Johnston. They said they all remain interested in applying for state casino licenses and they believe their projects would benefit the communities..." |
