Iowa County Commission Hold First Meeting23 March 2004OTTUMWA, Iowa – As reported by the KTVO3: "Wapello County's newly formed River Hills Riverboat Commission held its first official meeting Monday morning at the Hotel Ottumwa. The non-profit organization was created to help attract a riverboat gaming facility to Ottumwa. The commission isn't just a group of advocates who hope to bring a casino to town. It would also be the licensee if the Legislature authorizes more gambling licenses. "Board Member Steve Seigel says, 'You have to have a licensee.' "…But first things first. The Iowa House recently passed a bill that continued the gambling moratorium, meaning no new licenses will be granted, period. But the bill is now in the Iowa Senate's hands, so the commission's primary goal at this point is to convince the General Assembly to lift that moratorium. "…Time is of the essence, so the commission plans to take action as soon as next week…" |
