Iowa Communities Aim for Casino Licenses

IOWA – As reported by the Quad-City Times: "After months and in some cases years of planning, development leaders in communities across Iowa are putting the finishing touches on proposals for new riverboat casinos they hope will win over state regulators.

"Their plans are due Wednesday to the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission.

"…Despite the anticipation of the applicants, commission members have said it could be several months before they grant any new licenses.

"…So far, voters in seven Iowa counties have passed referendums allowing them to apply for a gaming license.

"…The communities that hope to land a riverboat casino were buoyed by news that voters in three central Iowa counties — Dallas, Warren and Madison — rejected gambling referendums on Tuesday.

"…The state commission has not yet indicated how many licenses it expects to hand out, and Iowa lawmakers did not weigh in on the issue earlier this year when they voted to allow gambling expansion…"
