Iowa commission to consider more licenses

TAMA, Iowa -- As reported by the Iowa Times-Republican: "Tama Mayor Chris Bearden was on hand for the Jan. 11 meeting of the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission held in Johnston. He told The News-Herald Monday he came away from that meeting with the understanding the commission will take another look at additional casino licenses in Iowa at their March meeting.

"...Tama County is already home to Iowa's largest casino complex — the Meskwaki Bingo•Casino•Hotel on the Settlement west of Tama-Toledo. The Native American-owned resort is not subject to Iowa sales or gaming taxes or state licensing, but gambling offered must conform to Iowa regulations.

"Proponents of a casino claim a second one would enhance the area as a destination location. John Pavone, head of Signature Management Group, which has been associated with Tama in the possible casino venture, has pointed to the success of three state-licensed casinos in Council Bluffs.

"...The Racing and Gaming Commission has said it wanted to study revenues generated by the four casinos for which licenses were approved in 2005 before any further casino gambling expansion would be considered..."
