Iowa College Under Investigation3 May 2004IOWA – As reported by the KTVO: " The Iowa Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board is going to take a look at a closed case involving allegations of illegal gambling involving Indian Hills Community College athletic staff members. "'Last Thursday the ethics board directed that an investigation begin to see if any computers at Indian Hills were used to promote outside activity, not just related to gambling although that seems to be what's at issue. But if there was any misuse of any computer belonging to the community college,' Executive Director Charlie Smithson said. "…Earlier this year, the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation and the Ottumwa Police Department conducted an embezzlement and gambling probe involving several Ottumwa institutions. The DCI looked into a gambling and bookmaking ring that involved employees at the Ottumwa Regional Health Foundation, IHCC, and Ottumwa High School. "…No where in the investigation search warrants filed in January is it alleged that IHCC coaches used the college's computers, time or resources to gamble illegally. However police confiscated computers out of two of the three employees' offices and homes. "The search warrants allege that Ottumwa High School coaches placed sports bets online. Indian Hills coaches were only said to have placed bets with Jerry Parker…" |
