Iowa Casinos Take in Over $1 Billion13 July 2005IOWA – As reported by the Des Moines Register: "Gamblers left behind a record $1.1 billion at Iowa's riverboats and racetrack casinos during the past 12 months, up 4 percent from a year earlier, creating broadly felt effects on average Iowans. "Casino spending generated an estimated $263 million in state, county and city taxes for the budget year that ended June 30, easing the burden on taxpayers, according to the Iowa Gaming Association, an industry group. "The state money will be used for schools, environmental programs, infrastructure, gambling treatment and other programs. "In Polk County, casino profits are crucial to paying off the $217 million, county-owned Iowa Events Center. "…The average casino customer lost $55 per visit…" |
