Iowa Casino Opponents, Supporters Face Off7 January 2004IOWA – As reported by the Hampton Chronicle: "The gloves came off Monday night when supporters of a proposed casino and citizens against gambling gathered in Center One in Hampton to hear a report on the gaming industry in Iowa from Wes Ehrecke, president of the Iowa Gaming Association (IGA). "More than two dozen citizens braved sub-zero temperatures to attend the informational meeting, which turned into a forum on the pros and cons of bringing gambling to Franklin County. "…According to Ehrecke, 'One of the strongest indicators of the value of these 13 (Iowa casinos) happened last November. (The state of Iowa) wanted to have a re-vote every eight years. Last November, 10 counties where gaming properties are located had to vote. They passed by an average of 84 percent.' "…Ehrecke's sales pitch also attempted to dispel fears commonly cited by gambling foes, including increases in bankruptcies, increased crime, and cases of gambling addiction. "…'You're a heck of a salesman,' said Jerry Miller, pastor of the Hampton United Methodist Church. 'You failed to talk about the counties who overwhelmingly failed to pass this. The people of Franklin County are intelligent.'…" |
