Iowa Allows More Gambling Licenses

DES MOINES, Iowa – As reported by the Sioux City Journal: "The Iowa House turned back a final attempt Thursday to block the issuance of new riverboat gambling licenses in the state, handing a hard-fought victory to several communities betting on new casinos to boost their economic prospects.

"Lawmakers from six counties where residents voted to allow new casinos mounted a full-court press and were able to overcome a band of anti-gambling legislators who tried to slam the door on further gambling expansion.

"A previous House gaming bill contained a license moratorium, but the Senate voted earlier this week to leave a decision on expansion in the hands of the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission. The House accepted the Senate's version with hopes of ending the 2004 session.

"…Thursday's pivotal House vote marked the last major gambling issue to find resolution, and sends the entire gambling bill back the Senate for a final vote. House members approved the entire gambling package on a 56-41 vote and it is expected to easily pass the Senate, where support is stronger…"
