Iowa AG Wants Gambling Ruling7 April 2004DES MOINES, Iowa – As reported by the Sioux City Journal: "Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller said Tuesday he would once again ask the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn an Iowa Supreme Court ruling that tossed out the state's gaming tax structure and put gambling at the top of the legislative agenda this year. "The appeal filed Tuesday came as gaming interests and legislative leaders continued their fragile negotiations to find a compromise before the close of the legislative session, tentatively scheduled for next week. "Miller wants the U.S. Supreme Court to throw out a case decided by the Iowa Supreme Court, which said the state violated its constitution by unfairly taxing racetrack casinos at a higher rate than riverboat casinos. "…Senate President Jeff Lamberti, R-Ankeny, said the filing of the appeal would make those negotiations harder. "…Lamberti said it's unlikely the U.S. Supreme Court will take up the case twice, and said he believes there is less than a 50-50 chance the court will hear it…" |
