Intimidation alleged at Foxwoods union effort

CONNECTICUT -- As reported by the Connecticut Day: " Gaming workers unhappy with wages and benefits at Foxwoods Resort Casino are signing cards that could launch a union, but are doing so, a union organizer said, under an atmosphere of growing intimidation.

"Late Friday and early Saturday, longtime employees said, workers began signing union authorization cards and union organizers began more actively talking during breaks and in parking lots to 3,500 co-workers about the prospect of forming a union. About 10,000 people work at the casino.

"Foxwoods managers, however, have been 'intervening' in those one-on-one talks, said Bob Madore, director of the Northeast region for the United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America. Such interviews, Madore said, may be a violation of federal labor organizing laws.

"...Foxwoods spokesman Saverio Mancini denied that any sort of intimidation is occurring.

"...The union has not filed any formal complaints with the National Labor Relations Board or Attorney General Richard Blumenthal's office, but Blumenthal said Monday his office has 'received some reports about conversations with casino workers; that may be inappropriate..."
