Inquiry in Washington state compacts rejected22 July 2008OLYMPIA, Washington -- As reported by the Seattle Postt-Intelligencer: "Democratic leaders in the House and Senate have rejected Republicans' request for an inquiry into the connection between political contributions and tribal gambling compacts negotiated by Gov. Chris Gregoire. "Republican leaders requested the inquiry last month after a story in the Seattle P-I raised questions about details of the compacts and tribal campaign contributions to Democrats and Gregoire. "The issue has become fodder for attack ads against Gregoire. The governor has said she negotiated in good faith, curtailed gambling expansion in Washington and that the tribes have every right to participate in state politics with campaign contributions. "...As governor, Gregoire negotiated tribal compacts that have allowed expansion of gambling in Washington and reversed her position on revenue sharing, which she now opposes. "Unlike Washington, at least 20 other states have revenue sharing agreements for tribal gambling, which generate hundreds of millions of dollars for government programs. "...House Speaker Frank Chopp, D-Seattle, said an inquiry would be counterproductive..." |
