Injunction to stop Sands implosion filed18 October 2007TLANTIC CITY, New Jersey -- As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "Until this week, the only question about the Sands Casino Hotel implosion scheduled for tonight was whether it would be worth the hype. Now, an 11th-hour legal challenge has raised a new one: whether the implosion that will bring down the old casino to make way for a $1.5 billion megaresort will happen at all. "The owner of a hotel about 90 feet from the Sands filed papers in Superior Court late Wednesday afternoon seeking a temporary injunction to stop the demolition because of what he believes to be lingering health and safety concerns. An 11. a.m. hearing today will decide the matter. "Vincent Barth, who owns the 10-story Park Lane Apartment Hotel on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, claims that Sands owner Pinnacle Atlantic City has not fully responded to earlier requests for proof that the demolition will cause no exposure to cancer-causing asbestos. He wants the court to prohibit future demolition activities until he receives answers that adequate health and safety measures have been taken.
