Indiana Tribal Casino Debate Continues

INDIANA – As reported by the Northwest Indiana Times: "The Ho-Chunk Nation's interest in building a casino in south suburban Lynwood, which it announced earlier this year, has sparked a debate that has raged with barely a reprieve.

"People on both sides of the issue have mounted a concerted effort to sway opinions in their favor. Proponents tout the casino as a means of stimulating economic development in an area that has little -- and creating thousands of jobs in the process.

"Opponents say residents are being hoodwinked by a development that ultimately would kill area businesses, cause property values to plummet and send crime skyrocketing.

"With a group called Citizens For Our Community spearheading the effort, opponents also have sought help from nearby municipalities, peppered area lawns with anti-casino signs and disseminated information casting the casino as a cancer on society.

"But some advocates for the casino say the battle is not being fought on a level playing field. They say a number of claims made in opposition of the casino -- primarily in literature distributed in packets and on the group's Web site -- are distortions, half-truths or simply false…"
