Indiana Tracks May Get Boost

INDIANA – As reported by the Indianapolis Star: "Lawmakers could give horse breeders and racetrack owners in Indiana a reprieve today as Republican leaders in the state Senate propose an increase in the state's horse-racing subsidy.

"Sen. Robert Jackman, R-Milroy, said he will propose an amendment to House Bill 1365 in a Senate Finance Committee hearing this morning. The amendment would raise the subsidy to $44 million from $27 million, he said.

"A majority of the money would be used to increase the prize money for winning horses, Jackman said. The subsidy is funded with riverboat casino admissions and wagering taxes.

"…Larger purses generally attract more and better racehorses. Better horses, in turn, attract more bettors.

"The subsidy is seen by lawmakers opposed to gambling as a better way to increase purse sizes without expanding gambling…"
