Indiana State Police Out of Casino Business

10 June 2005

INDIANA – As reported by the Indiana Post-Tribune: "…For the last 8 years [Indiana State Police Trooper Melinda Garcia] has helped keep peace at the region's casino boats along Lake Michigan, including Resorts East Chicago (formerly Harrah's) and the Empress in Hammond, now Horseshoe Casino.

"All that will end for her and 100 other troopers, likely within the year.

"The state is getting out of the business of policing the boats and turning that job over to a new cadre of plain-clothes sleuths.

"…When state regulators finish transition plans, they'll have new gaming commission agents perform the troopers' old duties.

"The Indiana General Assembly this year voted to allow the change, and Gov. Mitch Daniels is eager to get troopers off the boats and back to enforcing laws on state highways.

"…Ernest Yelton, state Gaming Commission executive director, said the change means more specially trained agents at the casinos…"
